Top Names for Boys and Girls

When it comes to baby names, the king and queen of the crib are Noah and Emma. Noah has held the crown for four years running, while this is Emma’s third consecutive year in the top spot. That’s the word from the Social Security Administration’s 2017 list of the most popular baby names, which is based on the applications for Social Security numbers in 2016. Emma is derived from the Germanic word “ermen,” which means “whole” or “universal.” Emma is used as a diminutive of Emily, Emmeline, Amelia or any other name beginning with “em.” Noah is a Hebrew name meaning “rest” or “comfort.” There is only one new name on the list this year, which is Elijah. Alexander fell off the top 10 list.
